Indri lemurs live in small family groups and feed on a wide variety of leaves and fruits. They have low population densities and are threatened over most of their range by deforestation and habitat fragmentation.

Indris are the largest lemurs still living. Of approximately 40 lemur species living in Madagascar when humans arrived, about 1/3-including all of the largest species-are extinct. The pattern is also found among living lemurs; the smaller species are generally doing better than the larger ones.
