Most of Madagascar's people live in rural villages like this one. Antananarivo is the only real city-in many ways a typical overgrown third-world capital-and home to more than one million people. Friendly and gracious, most Malagasy people are economically very poor. The population of 14 million has an estimated annual growth rate of 3.2%.
