Rice is the mainstay of the Malagasy diet and agricultural economy. Where possible Asian-style irrigated paddies have been developed. Essentially all lands suitable for irrigated rice are now in use. There is relatively little fertile land for other agriculture. Most of the area of the island is grazed by cattle, but overall the productivity for forage is low.
