Human settlements soon developed into political states whose relations were not always peaceful. Remains of village moats and fortifications are still visible in the central highlands. These ruins probably date from the 18th to early 19th century.

An independent nation today, Madagascar was a French colony from the late 19th century until 1960. President Ratsiraka Didier assumed power in 1975 and tried to implement a Malagasy variety of socialism. Zafy Albert was elected president in 1993, and President Ratsiraka was re-elected in 1996.
