Why is Madagascar so special?

Deep, red, nutrient-leached soil has weathered from Precambrian granitic rock that underlies the eastern and central parts of Madagascar. Huge granite domes dot the central plateau.

Jurassic sedimentary formations occur in the west. As illustrated here, these formations sometimes occur as thick beds of limestone which weather into the weirdly shaped points and pinnacles called "tsingy" in Malagasy.

There is no current volcanic activity.
