Rainforest is found in the east, where water-bearing air comes off the Indian Ocean. Dry tropical forest occurs in the west and northwest, and spiny desert on the south and southwest margins.

Land has been cleared largely from the central region outward - remaining natural areas are found mostly around the perimeter. Less than 15% of the original native forest remains. The rest has been cleared by people or transformed by cattle and fire. Only about 2% of the total area is in parks or reserves.
