RIP. We were saddened to learn of the recent (23 October) death of Stanley Galen Smith at the age of 89.  Galen (as he was known), a professor for many years at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, specialized on Cyperaceae and Typhaceae, and was also the father of Manual Elaeocarpaceae author Damon A. Smith.  Although he worked mostly in the United States, Galen also collected in Mexico and Colombia, and accompanied Damon to Costa Rica for two weeks in 1994 in search of Sloanea [as reported in The Cutting Edge 1(2): 2, Apr. 1994].  We extend our condolences to Damon and the rest of his family.
