How to Cite the Manual

Now that the volumes have begun to appear (as part of the Garden's monograph series) we can say more definitely how to cite the Manual. According to the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden format, individual treatments would be cited as follows:

Maas, P. J. M. & H. Maas-van de Kamer. Costaceae. Pp. 413-423 in, B. E.

Hammel, M. H. Grayum, C. Herrera, & N. Zamora (eds.), Manual de Plantas
de Costa Rica. vol. II. Gimnospermas y monocotiledóneas (Agavaceae-
Musaceae). Monogr. Syst. Bot. Missouri Bot. Gard. 92: 1-694.*

Morales, J. F. 2003. Poaceae. Pp. 598--821 in, B. E. Hammel, M. H. Grayum, C.

Herrera, & N. Zamora (eds.), Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica. vol. III.
Monocotiledóneas (Orchidaceae-Zingiberaceae). Monogr. Syst. Bot.
Missouri Bot. Gard. 93: 1-884.

Chapters in the soon-to-appear vol. I could be cited thusly:

Zamora, N., B. E. Hammel & M. H. Grayum. (in prep.) Vegetación/ Vegetation. In,

B. E. Hammel, M. H. Grayum, C. Herrera, & N. Zamora (eds.), Manual de
Plantas de Costa Rica. vol. I. Introducción/Introduction. Monogr. Syst.
Bot. Missouri Bot. Gard.

Grayum, M. H., B. E. Hammel & N. Zamora. (in prep.) Historia/History. In, B. E.

Hammel, M. H. Grayum, C. Herrera, & N. Zamora (eds.), Manual de Plantas
de Costa Rica. vol. I. Introducción/Introduction.
Monogr. Syst. Bot. Missouri Bot. Gard.

The four dicot volumes, in preparation, will be published in approximately these family groups, but the volumes will not appear chronologically in this order, and each will be given a different number in the monograph series, at the time of publication:

Vol. IV. Dicotiledóneas (Acanthaceae-Clethraceae).
Vol. V. Dicotiledóneas (Clusiaceae-Haloragaceae).
Vol. VI. Dicotiledóneas (Hamamelidaceae-Piperaceae).
Vol. VII. Dicotiledóneas (Plantaginaceae-Zygophyllaceae).

If needing to cite treatments to appear in these future volumes, one could use this format:

Gonzáles, J. Moraceae. (in prep.). In, B. E. Hammel, M. H. Grayum, C. Herrera, &

N. Zamora (eds.), Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica. vol. VI. Dicotiledóneas
(Hamamelidaceae-Piperaceae). Monogr. Syst. Bot. Missouri Bot. Gard.

*The Manual Project is a collaboration among the Missouri Botanical Garden (MO), the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica (CR), and the Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio) and has been funded generously by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The above citations reflect only the particulars of the physical publication. Any parties wishing to show in their bibliographies the collaborative nature of this project are encouraged to do so.
