Fragments from the Botanical Frontier:

ARKANSAS
Trailways Bus Brochure
This Trailways bus brochure, probably from the 1940s, promised customers that modern transportation meant a carefree vacation. No doubt their disclaimers under "Objectionable Persons" and "Restrictions" were also thought to ensure that carefree quality. Though Demaree rode Trailways buses all over the country, he ended up going to Mexico by car with his Stanford professor, Ira Wiggins, in 1930. Missouri Botanical Garden collections. (141 KB) Demaree's public transportation based lifestyle shows in the very materials he used to keep his collections and documents together. This packet of specimen labels, is a composite of a utility bill envelope and luggage tags, testifies to Demaree's frugality, or perhaps fieldwork budget limitations. (44 KB) Demaree's 1947-49 field notebook, also held together in part with luggage tags, is arranged by county, and includes many layers of overwritten notes from as late as 1974.
