Dry rice tavy
Click image for enlargement In addition to long-term agriculture, shifting cultivation, referred to as "tavy", is also practiced. Tavy is carried on in cycles after primary forest is cut. Burning the vegetation makes nutrients available for a few years of crop growth. Then secondary forest reclaims the land until it is in turn cleared for another cycle of crops. The crop shown here is dry (non-irrigated) rice.
