A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Viticula,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. viticula: a little vine; also, a tendril, q.v.; “a trailing or scrambling stem, like that of the Vine, Gourd, Cucumber, &c.” (Lindley); “viticula, also printed ‘viticulus’ = surculus” (Jackson) [> L. viticula,-ae (s.f.I), “a (little) vine; a vine-twig, or similar growth” (Glare); vitis + dim. -cula]; syn. of sarmentum,-i (s.n.II), q.v.;

- proprie non repit, sed saxis incumbit, aquæ motum sequens, viticulis ramosis, inferius tenuibus, nigris, aliquousque nudis, inde foliis angustis nigris, ad media viticula atro-viridibus cinctis (Dill.), it does not characteristically creep, but lies down on rocks, following the movement of the water, with branched tendrils [or surculi], [that are] below thin, black, to some degree naked [i.e. lacking appendages], from there encircled with narrow (shining) black leaves, blackish-green at the middle tendril.

Runner (a species of stem): Runner, Flagellum, Sarmentum, Viticula. A naked branch lying on the ground, taking root with a tuft of leaves at certain distances. Fragaria vesca (S. Gray); see sarmentum,-i (s.n.II).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
