A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Veil: see velum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. velo; = Greek calyptra (s.f.I), a covering, a woman's veil; velum was once used to indicate the of the moss capsule; see volva,-ae (s.f.I); note also teleblem, q.v., teleoblema, universal veil of agarics and Gasteromycetes; see -blem, -blema (English);

- velum universalis, abl. sg. velo universali; volva universalis, universal veil or volva.

- velum partiale (adj.B): partial veil, abl. sg. velo partiali;

- pileus in superficie reliquias volvae universalis tenui-farinosas retinens, pileus on its upper surface retaining finely-mealy remains of the universal veil.

NOTE: the word ‘calyptra,-ae (s.f.I) [> Gk. calyptra (s.f.I): ‘a woman's veil, a covering;’ not in classical Latin is often used for ‘cap, hood, lid;’ see calyptra.

annularis,-e (adj.B): (in fungi) “(of the remains of the veil on the stipe) resembling a ring or ‘annulus’” (S&D).

Velum universale = volva universalis for "universal veil."

Marginal veil = Partial veil (Ainsworth & Bisby).

Partial veil: cortina,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. cortina, q.v.

Primordial veil: the protoblem, q.v.

Subuniversal veil: the protoblem, q.v.
