A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

vaporarius,-a,-um (adj.A): of or pertaining to a vaporarium, q.v.;

Cortex,-icis (s.m.II) vaporarius (adj.A): the bark used in the vaporarium, i.e. the bark-stove or bark-bed, derived from tanner’s bark, q.v.; see bark;

- [fungi] duobus hactenus locis observavimus hancce speciem: in vaporario nimirum cortice et in abietinis montosis muscosis (Schlander Berg) (S&A), up to now, this very species observed in two places: of course, on vaporarium-bark [i.e. tanner’s bark, i.e. a ‘bark-stove’] and in mossy, montane fir- [sc. locis, places] (in the Schlander Berg).

- [fungi] Hab. [var. A] ad truncos varios solitaria, sed frequens:[var.B] praesertim ad cortices vaporarios quotannis redux (S&A), [var. A] dwells solitary on various trunks [i.e. the trunks of various trees], but frequent: [var. B] brought back every year, especially on vaporarium-bark [i.e. tanner’s bark].

- [Lepiotus colubrinus: fungi] Hab. utraque var. in cortice vaporario frequens; sed vix alibi (S&A), each variety dwells on vaporarium-bark, common; but hardly elsewhere [i.e. anywhere else].

- Hab. [var. a], in gramineis humidiusculis pinguioribus hinc inde satis frequens: [var. b], praesertim in cortice vaporario (Seer Lohgruben) gregaria, rarius alibi passim solitaria terrestris, observata (S&A), [var. a] dwells quite frequent here and there in somewhat dank, more rich [i.e. fertile] grassy [sc. places]: [var. b], observed primarily on vaporarium-bark (Seer Lohgruben), gregarious, more rarely elswhere, everywhere solitary, on the ground.

- [fungi] var. [vaporaria], statura, forma et colore chocolatino distincta, etiam magis squamosa, in cortice vaporario spontanea provenit, aere pluvio satis frequens (S&A), [variety vaporaria] distinct by the stature, shape and chocolate color, also it is more scaly, it appears spontaneously on vaporarium bark, quite frequent in rainy air [i.e. weather].

- [Sclerotium vaporarium; fungi] degit haec species intra corticem vaporarium, leviter tecta, frequens (S&A), this species, frequent, lightly covered, lives inside vaporarium-bark [i.e. tanner’s bark].

- [Fuligo vaporaria; fungi, a slime mold] abunde promergit ex acervis coriariorum [vaporiariorum], corticem tum florere ajentium (S&A), profusely surging forth from the (stock)piles of the tanners, then the bark they [i.e. the tanners] say ‘flowers.’

- [L. quercinum; fungi]caespites magni. Radices copiosae, longae. Frequens crescit haec species in cortice vaporario (Seer Allee), nec alibi hactenus: ceteris contemporalis (S&A), clumps large. Roots copious, long. This common species grows on vaporarium bark (Seer Allee), up to the present, not elsewhere, living during the same time [i.e. period] as the others [i.e. species].

[fungus] Fuligo vaporaria grows “on tan, that is, ‘tanbark,’ in hot-beds and stoves” spreads remarkably fast.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
