A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
unguiculatus,-a,-um (adj.A): unguiculate, clawed, ending in a point similar to a small, animal's claw; also, contracted at the base into a claw; (obsol.) “a term exclusively applied to petals, which have an unguis or stalk” (Lindley); “having nails or claws; of or relating to the Unguiculata; tapering below into a claw or a stalklike base (as in a petal)” (WIII) [> L. unguiculus,-i (s.m.II), a fingernail, dim. of unguis,-is (s.f.III) claw];

- petala 2-5 , parva, 2 superiora longe unguiculata, apice cucullata, sub galea recondita, 3 inferiora minima v. obsoleta (B&H), the petals 2-5, small, the 2 upper long-clawed, cucullate [i.e. hooded], hidden under the galea.

Unguiculate (Eng.noun): “a mammal of the division Unguiculata” (WIII)

Barbula unguiculata Hedw., referring to the appearance of the stout excurrent costa (apiculate leaf).
