A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
ternatim (adv.): ternately, ‘into threes’; three each, by threes, three at a time; three together; cf. singulatim (adv.), one by one; singly; see -natim (adv.); cf. -fariam (adv.); cf. -merus,-a,-um (adj.A);

- folia 3-natim verticillata in Banisteria, 4-natim in Tristellateia, leaves verticillate in threes in Banisteria, in fours in Tristellateia.

- foliis ternatim fissis, with leaves divided into threes.

- folia ternatim pseudo-verticillata (folium cum stipulis foliiformibus) (B&H), leaves in threes [i.e. in whorls of three], pseudo-verticillate (the leaf with leaf-shaped stipules).

- (algae) coenobium libere natans, sistens rete saccatum, oblongum, undique clausum, e cellulis per extremitates ternatim (rarius quaternatim, rarissimi binatim) coniunctis compositum (Braun), coenobium freely floating, exhibiting a saccate, oblong, network closed in every part, composed of cells throughout to the extremites, bound together in threes (more rarely in fours, extremely rarely in twos).

- arbores fruticesve balsamifluae, foliis alternis pinnatim ternatimve compositis (B&H), trees or balsamiferous shrubs, with leaves alternate, pinnately or ternately [i.e.in groups of three] compound.

- subtribus 4. Cimicifugeae. Folia ternatim subpinnatimve decomposita (B&H), subtribe 4. Cimicifuleae. Leaves decompound [i.e. more than once divided] in threes or nearly pinnate.

- folia opposita, ternatim pinnatimve plurifoliolata v. rarius simplicia (B&H), leaves opposite, plurifoliolate in threes or pinnate or more rarely undivided.
