A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
serus,-a,-um (adj.A): late; comp. serior,-ius (adj. B); supl. serissimus,-a,-um (adj.A); see serotinus,-a,-um (adj.A);

- a Delphinium grandifloro distinguitur D. Chinense caule rectiore rigido floribus facilius versicoloribus florescentiaque seriore (DeCandolle), Delphinium Chinense is distinguished from D. grandiflorum by the stem more straightly rigid, by the flowers more readily changing colors and the late flowering.

- foliis glaberrimis, serioribus acuminatis (DeCandolle), with the flowers completely glabrous, the later ones acuminate.

- tempore antheses verno, vel seriore, (DeCandolle), with the antheses [i.e. period of flowering] in the spring time, or later.

- in sero autumno florens, flowering in late autumn.

- ac inde, vita aestivali laete gregatimque peracta, multo parciores tantum minusque perfectas seriore anni tempore adesse (S&A), and from then, its summer life flourishingly and gregariously accomplished, they occur only much smaller and less perfect in the later time of the year.

- [fungi] perennis: junior sero autumno, fertilis vere et aestate (S&A), perennial, the younger in late autumn, fertile in spring and summer.

- [fungi] e primordiis sero autumno obviis mediam insequente vere attingit aetatem; matura occurrit Jul. Aug. (S&A), from its first beginnings encountered in late autumn, it reaches middle-age in the following spring; mature [i.e. plants] occur in July, August.

Salix serissima, 'fruit maturing in very late summer.'
