A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Sentis,-is (s.m.III), abl. sg. sente, nom. & acc. pl. sentes, dat. & abl. pl. sentibus: a thorn-bush, briar, esp. Rosa canina but also brambles, q.v., usually plural; a brake of thorny bushes (Lewis & Short); see brake, hedge; see bramble; cf. see saepes, gen. sg. saepis (s.f.III), a hedge; see bramble; see thicket; perhaps a synonym of vepres, q.v. (vepris, veper)(gen. sg. -is) (s.m.III), although in some texts both words seem to indicate two different types of spiny plants, perhaps small trees (such as Crataegus) as opposed to shrubby diffuse spiny plants, such as Rubus.

NOTE: cf. sentus,-a,-um (adj.A): “thorny, rough, rugged; bristly” (Lewis & Short).

Brier, also briar (Eng. Noun): “a plant (as members of the genera Rosa, Rubus, and Smilax) with a woody stem bearing thorns or prickles; (British) a wild rose” (WIII).

- rubi sentesque, (red) raspberries and briars (blackberries).

Rubus frondisentis Blanch. (leafy bramble).

Acacia sentis (nouns in apposition); Adesmia sentis; Cochranea sentis; Patagonium sentis.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
