A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Seges,-etis (s.f.III), abl.sg. segete, nom. & acc. pl. segetes, gen. pl. segetum, dat. & abl. pl. segetibus: a grain (corn or wheat) field; also field of flax (Linum); the standing grain, growing crop; soil, earth, field, ground; crop, produce, yield, fruit, harvest; note that an arvum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., is a field that has been plowed but not yet sown;

- in Aegypto vulgatissima inter Lini segetes (DeCandolle), very common in Egypt amid the fields of flax.

- cultro segetem succidens, cutting down the wheat field with a knife.

- in arvis inter segetes Europae mediae (DeCandolle), in the fields between the planted corn in central Europe.

- inter segetes et in vineis Gallise (DeCandolle), in the midst of the corn fields and vineyards of France.

- inter segetes et in aridis AEgypti (DeCandolle), among the cornfields and in the arid places of Egypt.

- frequentissimum inter segetes (DeCandolle), most frequent in the midst of grain-fields.

- inter segetes et in ruderatis Europae austr. (DeCandolle), amid the wheat fields and in waste ground of Southern Europe.

- inter segetes et lina in Europa tota (DeCandolle), amid the wheat fields and flax in all Europe.

- inter hordeaceas segetes circa Alexandriam (DeCandolle), amid the barley crops around Alexandria.

- ad vias et inter segetes (DeCandolle), on roads and amid the wheat crops.

Chrysanthemum segetum L., weed among crops (gen. pl.); Githago segetum

[fungi] Ustilago segetum (Bull.) Dittm. vars. a, Hordei, b, Tritici c, Avennae, d, Panici [of Hordeum, Triticum, Avena, Panicum]: Omnes hae varr., notissima aeque ac pessima segetum suarum vitia, agricolas male cruciant Aestate. (S&A), all these varieties are most remarkable, equally also they badly torment the farmers as the worst infection of their very own crops. In summer.
