A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
rhops-, also rops-: in Gk. comp., a twig; bush, shrub; underwood, brushwood [> Gk. r[h]Ops (s.f.III), gen. rhOpos: shrub, bush; in plural: underwood, brushwood (Liddell & Scott]); dim. rhOpion (s.n.II): bush; twig, bough [> Gk. rhOps, gen.sg. rhOpos (s.f.III), shrub, bush; underwood, brushwood (Liddell & Scott)]; see ‘twig.’

NOTE: not to be confused with compounds in Ops, q.v., gen.sg. opis (s.f.III): eye, face.

Chamaerops,-ropis (s.f.III), L., abl.sg. Chamaerope (Arecaceae): > Gk. chamai, on the ground, + rhops [s.f.III], a twig; alluding to the low growth of the plants. Palmaceae. (Paxton); Chamaerops L., ‘dwarf bush’ (Bailey).

Nannorhops,-opis (s.m.III), abl.sg. Nannorhope (Arecaceae).
