A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

quare (adv.)(qua (abl.sg.) + res) = qua re:

1. interrogative: in what way? How? for what reason? Why?

2. (relative) by which means, whereby; because of which, why; on what or which account; for the reason that, for which reason, because; “(introducing a new sentence) wherefore, therefore, hence” (Glare);

qua re:

- semina túrgida statu casso tantum visa, qua re genus dubium remanet (F. Mueller), seeds swollen, with only the empty state seen, for which reason the genus remains dubious.

quare:

- flores nondum reperti, quare stirpis genus hand omnino certum (F.Muell.), I have not yet found the flowers, for which reason the genus of the plant is not entirely certain.

- ut amenta staminifera me nondum visa, quare genus dubium relinquo. (F.Mueller), as the stamen-bearing aments were not yet seen by me, for which reason I leave the genus doubtful.

- [Fissidentaceae] Folia amplexicaulia, dorso et apice in laminam ultra folii apicem producta (quare in folio tres partes distinguuntur) (C. Mueller) leaves amplexicaul [i.e. clasping the stem], on the back and apex prolonged into a lamina beyond the apex of the leaf, (for which reason three parts are distinguished in the leaf).

- [Plagiopus; moss] Ex ic. Bridelianis Bartramiae fructum habet, sed specimina ejus herbarii carent, quare de peristomii structura referre non possumus (C. Muell.), according to the Bridelian pictures, it has the fruit of a Bartramia, but the specimens of his herbarium are absent, on which account we are not able to report regarding the structure of the peristome.

- sed e descriptionibus mancis haud tute recognoscenda, nec specimina in herbario suo invenimus quare genera omnino nobis omittenda videntur (B&H), but from the poor descriptions, hardly to be safely authenticated, nor are the specimens we encountered in his own (personal) herbarium, therefore the genera seem to us are to be completely dismissed.

- QUILESIA ab auctore cum Opilia comparata fuit, quare a Lindleyo et Endlichero dubie Olacineis adscita, ex descriptione auctoris videtur idem ac Moacurra(B&H), Qilesia was compared by the author with Opilia, for which reason doubtfully approved by Lindley and Endlicher for Olacineae, it seems to be, from the description of the author, the same as Moacurra.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
