psammo-: in Gk. comp., sand- [> Gk. psammos (s.f.or m.II): “sand; grains of sand; = Lat. sabulum (Liddell & Scott); see sand;

- psammogenus,-a,-um (adj.A), born of the sands, dweller in sandy regions.

- psammophilus, sand-loving, “as the vegetation of [sand] dunes” (Jackson); ; (fungi) “sand-loving; living on sand” (S&D); living on sandstone.

Paspalum psammophilum (sand-lover).

PSAMMA,-ae (s.f.I), Romer and Schultes. From psammos, sand; its place of growth. Graminaceae. A grass with a strong perennial creeping root; on some parts of the coast it is planted to keep the sand from being removed by the wind and tides; it is also used for mats and thatch. Synonym: 1, Arundo arenaria. (Paxton); genus synonymous with Ammophila. Apparently a first declension feminine noun: P. australis, P. littoralis, P. pallida, P. wiseana, P. marina.

Silene Psammitis Link. ex Spreng. (Caryophyllaceae).

Psammetum,-i (an association of Psamma arenaria on sand dunes” (Jackson); see -etum,-i (s.n.II).

psammogenus,-a,-um (adj.A): psammogenous, “producing a sandy soil (Clements)” (Jackson).

Psammisia,-ae (s.f.I) (Ericaceae).

Psammophora,-ae (s.f.I): > Gk. psammos, sand + phoros, bearing; in allusion to their sanded appearance. Aizoaceae” (Stearn 1996).

PSAMMOTROPHE, Eckl. et Zeyh. (in B&H).

Psammophytia,-ae (s.f.I): “used by Clements for sand or sandstone plant formations” (Jackson).

Psammophyton,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. psammophyto: “psammophyte; “a sand-plant, confined to sandy habitats, as [sand] dunes” (Jackson).

Psammite (Greek psammos, sand) is a general term for sandstone. It is equivalent to the Latin-derived term arenite and is commonly used in various publications to describe a metamorphosed sedimentary rock with a dominantly sandstone protolith. (Wikipedia July 2019).

psammiticus,-a,-um (adj.A): psammitic, of or relating to psammite.

Psammocora,-ae (s.f.I) (Psammocoraceae), a genus of colonial, reef-building, photosynthetic stony corals [cf. L. cora,-ae (s.f.I), the pupil of the eye].
