A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Oxford: county town of Oxfordshire, England. Oxford University is located there.

Oxonia,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. Oxonia = Oxforshire [Wiktionary Mar2019]; adj. oxoniensis,-e (adj.B);

- Universitas,-atis (s.f.III) Oxoniensis,-is, abl.sg. Universitate Oxoniensi.

- tam hæc, quam præcedens species, frequentissima est in muris Horti Botanici Oxoniensis (Dill.), this one, as much as the preceeding species, is extremely frequent on the walls [i.e. of buildings] of the Botanical Garden of Oxford [University].

Oxonium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. Oxonio: “is sometimes used in university circles as a Latin name for Oxford University in England (Wikipedia Mar2019).

NOTE: Oxon.: abbrev. for Oxonium,-ii (s.n.II); also used without the period, “used especially following post-nominal letters indicating status as a graduate” (Wiktionary Mar2019), e.g. J. Smith, B.A. Oxon.

NOTE: locative case for “Oxford” is either Oxoniae (the town) or Oxonii (usually referring to the University), both genitive singulars, the one of Oxonia (s.f.I), the other of Oxonium,-ii (s.n.II)

- Opera JO. JAC. DILLENII, M. D. in Universitate oxoniensi Botanices Professoris Sherardini. - OXONII E THEATRO „SHELDONIANO” (Dill.), the works of Johan Jacob Dillenius, M.D., [Sherardian Professor of Botany, [also gen.sg.]], at the University at Oxford, from the Sheldonian Theater at Oxford [Oxonium,-i (s.n.II)].

NOTE: The Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, England, built 1664-1669, after a design by Christopher Wren, named after Gilbert Sheldon, Chancellor of the University at the time; also Archbishop of Canterbury.

- Imprimatur: Liber, cui Titulus, Historia Muscorum &c. GUALT. HODGES, Vice-Canc. OXON. Decemb. 14. 1741. (Dill.), let it be printed [i.e. give license to print or publish]: a book, the title of which, Historia Muscorum &c.,[Gualtiero] Hodges, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford [Oxonii, gen.sg. Oxonium,-i (s.n.II)] December 14, 1741.

NOTE: Walter Dodges D.D., died 1757, administrator, University of Oxford, vice chancellor of the University 1741-1744 (Wikipedia March 2019): Gualt. is perhaps short for the Italian of the name ‘Walter:’ “Gualtiero” (Google March 2019).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
