A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Midrib, midnerve, midvein, a single costa (as in mosses), central nerve, also a central or main vein, middle vein; costa, “the midrib of a leaf; that part which is a direct extension of the petiole, and whence the veins arise; a leaf may have many costae” (Lindley); “the central or main rib of a leaf or similar structure” (Fernald 1950): costa,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. costa; nervus (s.m.II) medius (adj.A), abl. sg. nervo medio; nervus centralis (adj.B), abl. sg. nervo centrali; vena,-ae (s.f.I) media (adj.A); see rach-, rhach-: in Gk. comp. and rachis: rhachis,-idis (s.f.III); cf. veining; cf. pleur-, pleuri-, pleuro-; -pleurus,-a-um (adj.A): in Gk. comp., lateral, in a sideways position, ribbed; Lat. = -costatus; see costa; see rib.

- folia opposita, decussata, lanceolato-linearía, nervo medio, integra (Swartz), leaves opposite, decussate, lanceolate-linear, with a middle nerve, entire.

- nervus medius ruber (Swartz), midrib red.
Midrib (of fern-pinna): costula,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. costula, ‘a small rib or ridge, such as in the sculpturing of a mollusc shell; the midrib of fern-pinnae; secondary ribs;’ see costula,-ae (s.f.I).
