A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

mall-, mallo-: in Gk. & L. comp. wool-, q.v. [> Gk. mallos (s.m.II), a lock of wool; wool; a lock of hair]; see wool-; cf. heteromallous, homomallous;

- mallocaulos,-a,-on, with woolly stem; mallocephalus, with wooly head; mallococcus, downy fruited; malloneurus, with downy nerve or costa; mallophorus, wool-bearing; mallophyllus, with downy leaves; mallopodus, with downy stalk.

chaetomallus,-a,-um (adj.A): from Gk. chaite, ‘loose, flowing hair’ + mallos, flock of wool (Stearn 1996).

Mallotus,-i (s.m.II) (s.m.II), the Kamila tree (Euphorbiaceae) > Gk. mallOtos, fleecy, wooly, from mallos, lock of wool + -Otos,-E,-on (Gk.adj.ending): “a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australisn trees (Euphorbiaceae)” (WIII); the staminate flowers have numerous stamens, perhaps resembling a flock of wool [> Gk. mallOtos,-E,-on (Gk. adj.), fleecy, as cloaks lined with wool > mallos (s.m.II), a “flock of wool; a tress (of men’s hair)” (Liddell & Scott)].

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
