A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
hyo-: in Gk. comp. ‘rain’ > Gk. [h]yO: rain (verb) and substantive.

Hyophila; rain-loving; “the name means rain-loving and refers to a preference for wet habitats” (C&A); Hyophila involuta (C&A), grows on “wet calcareous rocks and soil over rocks, often on boulder in streams, or on wet cliffs or concrete bridge abutments” (C&A).

NOTE: not to be confused with hy-, hyo, q.v.: in Gk. comp. ‘swine-.‘

NOTE: not to be confused with hy-,hyo-, q.v.: in Gk. comp. the shape of the Greek letter upsilon.
