A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Glarea,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. glarea, nom.pl. glareae, gen.pl. glarearum, acc. pl. glareas, dat. & abl.pl. glareis: gravel; pebbles, sea or river-side shingle; cf. arena,-ae (s.f.I), 'sand'; sabulo,-onis (s.f.III) 'coarse sand, gravel;’ see alluvum; see pebble; see stone.

Gravel (Eng. noun): a loose aggregation of small water-worn or pounded stones or stones broken into small pieces, irregular in shape.

Glara,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. glara: scree, q.v.

Shingle (Eng. noun) > Swedish singel, “coarse gravel (esp. on the seashore);” “coarse rounded detritus or alluvial material esp. on the seashore differing from ordinary gravel only in the size of the stones which may be as large as a man’s head” (WIII).

- in ambulacris Horti Oxoniensis glareae & lapillis arcte adnascitur (Dill.), in the walkways of Oxford Garden it tightly grows upon gravel and pebbles.

- [fungi] vias praecipue arenosas pinetorum assidue comitatur, glareae glebulis saepe inquinata, autumno tardiore Oct. Nov. (S&A), it constantly accompanies roads, especially the sandy ones in pine associations, often dirtied with the gravel of little clods [of earth], in later autumn Oct. Nov.



glareigenus,-a,-um (adj.A): born of gravelly places; see glareosus,-a,-um (adj.A).
