A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

forsan (adv.): perhaps, perchance, possibly, it may be; cf. forsitan (adv.);

- [Phascum dubium; moss] forsan Ph. cuspidati varietas! (C. Muell.), possibly a variety of Phascum cuspidatum!

- [Ellipeia] frutex forsan scandens (B&H), a shrub possibly climbing.

- [fungi] abunde incolit utraque Tilias, Fraxinos, forsan et alias arbores (S&A), it inhabits abundantly both Tilias and Ashes, perhaps also other trees.

- simillima A. sylvestri et forsan pro hujus mera variatate habenda (DeCandolle), very similar to A. sylvestris and perhaps should be taken for a genuine variety of this.

- Tristania suaveolenti Smith imperfecte cognitae forsan propinqua (F. Mueller), perhaps closely connected with Tristania suaveolenta Smith, that is imperfectly understood.

- speciem similem (forsan Portulacam tuberosam Roxb.) reperi in locis fertilioribus Australiae intratropicae, radice napiformi aboriginibus cibum praebente (F. Mueller), I have found a similar species (perhaps P. tuberosa) in the more fertile places of intratropical Australia, the turnip-shaped root providing food to the aborigines.

- ad arbores campestres, praecipue populos, rarius ad saxa, nunquam in sylvaticis, per Europam forsan totam (mosses; Mueller), on plains trees, especially Poplars, more rarely on stones, never on forest [sc. trees] perhaps throughout all Europe. USE MUELLER? mosses?

- forsan hybrida inter Sphagnum subsecundum et S. cuspidatum (Austin), perhaps a hybrid between Sphagnum subsecundum et S. cuspidatum.

- planta incerta sedis forsan Rhynchostegiis adnumeranda (Austin), a plant of uncertain place, perhaps to be listed with the Rhynchostegia.

- Ceratodon purpureus var. aristatus, forsan species propria (Austin), perhaps a proper species.

- Var. quae etiam sylvestris reperitur, forsan tamen ex hortis migrata (DeCandolle), a variety which also was found wild, perhaps, however, transpored from gardens.

- differt carina minus obscure colorata et forsan fructu hucusque nondum reperto, it differs by the keel less indistinctly colored and possibly by the fruit up to now not found.

- [fungus] sapor vehemens, felleus, omnium forsan amarissimus (S&A), the taste is powerful, like bitter-gall, possibly the bitterest of all.

- Novam ut videtur hujus ordinis et forsan hujus generis stirpem flore fructuque carentem reperi in vallibus petraeis fluvii Roper (F. Muell.), I found an apparently new plant of this order and perhaps of this genus lacking flower and fruit in the stony vallies of the river Roper.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
