A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Extract, a preparation containing the essence of the substance from which it is derived, a concentrate: extractum (s.n.II), gen. sg. extracti, abl. sg. extracto; see concentrate; see decoction;

- cultura in extracto malti, culture on malt extract (Stearn).

- sporangia in discis Petrii agaro ex Phaseolo vulgari "Lima Bean" impletis statim post in extracto soli insertis formantia, sporangia on Petri discs full of Lima Bean agar forming immediately after inserted into an extract of soil.

- thallus in substrato nutricio (in substrato nutriciente) extracti malti

crescens, thallus growing in a culture medium of extract of malt.

- propagationes interdum nidulantes in extracto sterili aquarum terrearum, proliferations sometimes nidulant in a sterile extract of soil-based water.

- recipe Extracti Jalapae scrupulos duos, Take Of Extract of Jalap 2 scruples (Bennitt).

- recipe Extracti Opii Liquidi fluidrachmam, Of Liquid Extract of Opium 1 fl. drachm (Bennitt).

- recipe Extracti Filicis Liquidi minima sexaginta, Take Of Liquid Extract of Male Fern 60 minima (Bennitt).

- recipe Extracti Capsici Liquidi fluidrachmam, Take Of Liquid Extract of Capsicum 1 fl. drachm (Bennitt).

- recipe Extracti Malti drachmas sex, take Of Extract of Malt 6 drachms(Bennitt).

Abbr. ext.

- Ext. Col. = Extractum Colchici or Extractum Colocynthidis (Bennitt), extract of Colchicum [= Colchicum autumnale] or of Colocynthis.

NOTE: concentration: a crude active principle of a vegetatble usually in the form of a powder or resin, in pharmaceutical preparations [> L. com + centrum (center) + -atus,-a,-um]: concentratum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. concentrato (Muldoon 1946).
