A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

dor-, doro-; -dora,-ae (s.f.I); -dorum,-i (s.n.II): in Gk. comp. gift, gift of - [> Gk. dOron (s.n.II): a gift, present, offering (as a gift of honor, (of dishonor) a bribe; also the breadth of the hand, the palm; “the front part of the palm; a hand’s breadth, a palm, as a measure of length” (Liddell & Scott)]; see palma,-ae (s.f.I); see -dora,-ae (s.f.I).

NOTE: not to be confused with L. combinations in odor,-oris (s.m.III), an odor; see -odorus,-a,-um (adj.A), in L. comp. -scented; e.g. - anisodorus,-a,-um (adj.A), anise-scented (see anisum,-i (s.n.II).

NOTE: the stem ‘o’ in the noun is an omega (but an omicron in dora,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., ‘hide, skin.’

- dorophorus,-a,-um (adj.A): bearing gifts or presents.

NOTE: the ‘-o-’ in the following compounds is the connecting vowel:

Haemodorum,-i (s.n.II), from haima, blood, and doron, a gift; colour of the flowers; Haemodoraceae. (Paxton).

Lithodora,-ae (s.f.I), > Gk. lithos, a stone + dOron, a gift; gift of the stones or rocks; “with reference to the rocky habitat of these beautiful plants formerly included in Lithospermum” (Stearn 1996).

Typhonodorum,-i (s.n.II) (Araceae): 'gift of the typhoon.'

NOTE: Pandora,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. pandora: of a work executed by several hands, Pandora Hesiodi, the Pandora of Hesiod [> Pandora,-ae( s.f.I), > Gk. PandOra: 'gifted by all,' name of the first woman made by divine action and presented with gifts by all the gods (Lewis & Short).

Pandorea,-ae (s.f.I) (Endl.) Spach (Bignoniaceae); “the type species was associated with an insect plague on Norfolk Island, whence the name” (Stearn 1996), “the gods endowed her with their choicest gifts, while Zeus himself gave her a box which was to be given to the man she married, whom Zeus intended to be Prometheus. He [Prometheus], however, was too crafty to be caught in this way, but his brother married Pandora and opened the box, releasing all the evils Zeus intendd for Prometheus” (Stearn 1996). “Podranea is an anagram of Pandorea. Bignoniaceae” (Stearn 1996); Podranea ricasoliana, an evergreen creeper: Port St. Johns creeper, pink trumpet vine.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
