A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
coalitus,-a,-um (part.A): fused, united by growth, grown together [> L. co-alesco,-alui,-alitum, to unite, to grow together, coalesce > alesco, -ere, to grow up, increase (Lewis & Short) cf. alo, alui, altum and alitum, 3. to feed, nourish, support]; opp. liber,libera, liberum (adj.A), q.v., ‘free;’ opp. solutus,-a,-um (part.A), q.v., separated; see ‘fused;’

- styli 3-6, basi solum coaliti (F.Muell.), styles 3-6, united only at the base.

- calyx ex 4 sepalis coalitis compositus, calyx composed of 4 fused sepals.

- sepala ante anthesin coalita, per anthesin valvatim soluta (B&H), sepals before anthesis [i.e. before flowering] fused [i.e. grown together, throughout anthesis by valves set free [from neighboring parts).

- petala intra calycem in corollam genitalia cingentem coalita (B&H), petals fused within the calyx into a corolla enclosing the sexual organs.

- furcis late linearibus longe coalitis (Steph.), parum divergentibus, with the forks broadly linear, fused a long way, somewhat diverging.

- [Marchantia; liverwort] frons ad 5 cm longa, ob ramos longe coalitos latissimi, frondem parum dissectum formans, margine valde crispate (Steph.), the frond [i.e. thallus] to 5 cm long, very broad due to the branches growing together for a long way, forming a somewhat dissected frond.

- sepala 2-3, membranacea, in alabastrum globosum ovoideum coalita (B&H), sepals 2-3, membranaceous, fused into a globose, egg-shaped bud.

- petala saepius inaequalia in corollam pseudo - gamopetalam approximata coalitave, nunc omnino coadunata, nunc lateribus tantum subadglutinantia (DeCandolle), the petals very often unequal close together, or fused into a pseudo-gamopetalous corolla, sometimes joined together, sometimes only somewhat adhering together on the sides.

- stamina 6, in phalanges 2 petalis exterioribus oppositas alte coalita (B&H), stamens 6, in bundles 2, high coalesced opposite to the exterior petals.

- [Sarcochilus] pollinia quatuor cerina áurea per paria subglobosa coalita glándulas stigmatis forsan haud decidua? ope caudiculas indivisas affixa (F. Mueller), pollinia four, wax-colored, golden-yellow, nearly globose fused together in pairs.

- [Caryophylleae] Ovula 2-oo (excepta Quería), funiculis e fundo ovarii ortis liberis v. in columellam centralem coalitis affixa (B&H), ovules 2 to [indeterminate] (Queria excepted), with the funiculi arisen from the base of the ovary free or fused attached on the central columella.

- Gynoecii carpella breviter v. rarius ultra medium coalita (apicibus tamen liberis) in generibus pluribus, omnino coalita in Dillenia, Anona, Monodora, et Nymphaeaceis nonnullis (B&H), the carpels of the gynoecium shortly or more rarely fused by growth beyond the middle (yet with the apices free) in many genera, completely fused in Dillenia, Anona, Monodora, and some Nymphaeaceae.
