A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Cicada,-ae (s.f.I): the cicada, tree-cricket, “worn as an ornament in the hair of the Athenians” cf. Lidd. and Scott, under ‘tettix,’ as a symbol of summer” (Lewis & Short); see insect.

tettix,-igos (s.m.III): the “cicada, Cicada plebeia, or allied species, a winged insect fond of basking on trees, when the male makes a chirping or clicking noise by means of certain drums or ‘tymbals’ underneath the wings, ...” (Liddell & Scott); “the Greeks ate ‘tettiges’ to whet the appetite;” “a gold ornament worn in the hair” (Liddell & Scott).
