A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
asper,-era,-erum (adj.A) rough, harsh, uneven, often used of plants with spines or prickles;“rough with hairs or points” (Lindley); compar. asperior,-ius (adj.B); superl. asperrimus,-a,-um (adj.A); cf. scaber, scabra, scabrum (adj.A): scabrous, rough or gritty to the touch on account of numerous minute projections such as scales or points; opp. levis,-e (adj.B), laevis,-e (adj.B), smooth, free from unevenness, hairs or roughness; [declined like liber (q.v.) without the elision of the ‘e' before 'r' as in pulcher]

- folia alterna, simplicia, petiolata, ovato-cordata, aspera, aromatica (B&H), leaves alternate, simple, petiolate, ovate-cordate, rough, aromatic.

- frutex scandens asperrimus, shrub climbing, very rough.

- seminibus asperis, with the seeds rough.

- testa coriacea saepissime aspera, the test coriaceous, very often rough.

- folia laevia vel aspera, leaves smooth or rough.

- rupes,-is (s.f.III) aspera (adj.A), a jagged rock.

Sonchus asper (L.) Hill), rough (spiny-leaved); Anathallis asperilinguis, with rough tongue; Bulbostylis aspera; Hemistemma asperifolium.

exasperatus,-a,-um (part.A): 'roughened', covered with very short hard points;

- ramis frondiumque basi exasperato muricatis, and with the branched of the fronds at the roughened base, muricate [i.e. with short, hard points.

setoso-asper,-era,-erum (adj.A): roughened by bristly hairs;

- siliqua mollissime pilosa demum glabrata, nunquam setoso-aspera (DeCandolle), the silique very softly pilose, then glabrate [i.e. almost smooth (hairless), never setose-roughened.

subasper,-era,-erum (adj.A): somewhat roughened.
