A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
arundinaceus,-a,-um (adj.A), less often harundinaceus,-a,-um (adj.A): of reeds, reedy; cane-like; (as arundinaceus:) arundinaceous, “reed-like, having a culm like tall grasses” (Jackson); like a reed; usually having a hollow stem, like some grasses (used of Palms but recently obsolete) [> L. (h)arundo,-inis (s.f.III), the reed, cane]; see cane; arundinaceous (Eng.adj.): “of or relating to a reed; resembling reed or cane” (WIII), species of e.g. Arundo, Calamus, Donax, Phragmites.

- [Agrostis panicula] culmi tripedales, articulati, foliosi, laeves, simillima A. arundinaceae, sed panicula magis spicata [Linn.], the culms three feet high, articulate [i.e. nodose], full of leaves, smooth. Most similar to Agrostis arundinacea, but with the panicle more spicate.

- Juncus panicula arundinacea, in aquis stagnantibus & ad fluviorum ripas (Mich.), Juncus with a reed-like panicle, in stagnant waters and on the banks of rivers.

- [Tropidia; orchid] folia ampla v. arundinacea, venis elevatis subplicata. (B&H), leaves large or reed-like, somewhat plicate with elevated veins.

- [Stipa] habitus Arundinis majoris (Linn.) the habit [i.e. appearance] of Arundo major.

- [Agrostis] gluma petaloidea lanceolata, arundinacea, utraque valvula acumine mucronata (Linn.), the glumes like petals, lanceolate, reed-like [or resembling Arundo], both valvelets mucronate at the apex.

- [fungi] gregariae ac parallelae occurrunt striae in culmis arundinaceis (Phragmitidis) vetustis emortuis hinc inde (S&A), they occur in clumps and also parallel streaks here and there on the old, dead culms of reeds(of Phragmites).

- [term] Juba in Phytologia est arundinacea coma laxe effusa, qualis in Milio est (Ray), a “juba” in Phytology [i.e. botany] is a reed-like coma [i.e. plant apex] loosely spreading out, of such a kind as is in Milium.

- [Thallia geniculata] Excludi debent synonyma Brownei, Sloanei, Raji, Plukenetii & Bauhini, quae ad Marantam arundinaceam pertinent (Swartz.), the synonyms of Browne, Sloan, Ray, Plukenet and Bauhin ought to be excluded, which belong to Maranta arundinacea.

- [HOLCUS saccharatus] Milium indicum, arundinaceo caule (Swartz), Milium indicum with an arundinaceous [i.e. reed-like] stem.

- [Maranta arundinacea] Maranta petiolis ganglionosis. Brown, jam, 112. Canna indica radice alba, alexipharmaca. Sloan, j. 22. h. I. p.253. t.149. f.2. (Swartz), a Maranta with the petioles with many knots [or, with large knots or nodes] = the Canna indica with a white root, acting as an antidote. Note: see Canna indica under canna,-ae (s.f.I).

- [Saccharum; Saccharum ravennae] = Gramen paniculatum arundinaceum; Gramen arundinaceum; Gramen paniculatum arundinaceum; Arundo farcta vallium Ravennae [‘a solid [i.e. not hollow] Arundo of the valleys of Ravenna]; Arundo cava de Ravenna (Desf.); E culmis fistulas ad hauriendum tabaci fumum parant Arabes. Habitat in Atlante ad rivulorum ripas (Desf.); from the culms the Arabs prepare pipes for sucking up the smoke of tobacco. It grows on the Atlas [Mount Atlas] on the banks of rivulets.

NOTE:[Saccharum ravennae] planta pulcherissima. E culmis fistulas ad hauriendum tabaci fumum parant Arabes (Desf.), a most beautiful plant. The Arabs prepare pipes from the culms for inhaling the smoke of tobacco.

Saccharum arundinaceum Retz.”Trop. Asia, esp. India to China” (Uphof).

- [LIMODORUM altum] Helleborine radice arundinacea (Swartz.), a Helleborine with an arundinaceous root.

MARANTA arundinacea (Arrowroot); Puccinia arundinacea (on reeds, i.e. Phragmites communis).

Scolochloa arundinacea = Arundo donax.
