A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
arcte (adv.), arte (adv.); compar. arctius (adv.), superl. arctissime (adv.): closely, firmly, tightly; close or tight in space or relationship; opp. distanter (adv.), distantly or laxe (adv.) loosely; see tightly; note that classically arcte was not used, but arte was, superl. artissime (adv.); opp. leve (adv.) and laxe (adv.), loosely, slightly; opp. rare (adv.), far apart, sparsely, thinly; cf. conferte (adv.): crowdedly, densely; confertim (adv.), compactly, close together, densely, in a compact body; opp. laxe (adv.) ‘loosely;’

- [algae] rigidiusculis et parum gelatinosis, unde arcte [opp. leve, laxe] tantum chartae adhaeret (Agardh), somewhat rigid and slightly gelatinous, whence it adheres only tightly [opp. lightly or slightly to the paper.

- Fissidens plumosus rigidissimus arctissime eleganter flabellatus (Mueller), Fissidens plumosus, very rigid, very tightly, elegantly flabellate.

- folia integra arctius arcelata (Mueller), the leaves entire, more closely areolate.

- species nova arcte affinis, the new species is closely related.

- arcte tamen connexae sunt per Dilleniam et Actinidiam (B&H), however they are closely connected through Dillenia and Actinidia.

- volva arcte vaginata extus grisea, volva closely sheathed gray on the outside (Stearn).

- fronde siccitate arcte convoluta, with the frond when dry narrowly convolute.

- areolis magis arcte dispositis, with areoles more closely arranged.

- foliis arcte cauli appressis, with leaves closely appressed to the stem (dat. sg.).

- glumis arcte (non laxe) imbricatis, with the glumes tightly (not loosely) imbricate.

- flores in cymas terminales dichotomas dispositi, alares, arcte sessiles (B&H), the flowers arranged in dichotomous terminal cymes, wing like, closely sessile.

- carpella ad 10, in ovarium quoad petala inferum, quoad sepala superum, vertice concavum, arcte concreta (B&H), the carpels to 10, the lower [one] on the ovary as petals, the upper [one] as sepals, concave at the apex, closely grown together.

- valvis septo arcte connatis,, with the valves tightly fused with the septum.

- marginibus incurvis et filamenta costalia arcte circumplicantibus, with margins incurved and closely clasping the costal filaments.

- Tribe Mitrephoreae; Oxymitra; [Goniothalamus] Pétala 6, biseriatim valvata, crasso-coriacea, exteriora plana, ovata v. elongata, interiora circa genitalia in mitram conicam arcte coalita, basi in unguem latam angustata (B&H), petals 6, biseriately valvate, thick-leathery, the outer [petals] flat, ovate or elongate, the inner around the genitalia tightly fused into a conical cap, at the base narrowed into a broad claw.

- siccata sistit paginam viridem, opacam, hic & illic granulatam vel farinaceam, chartae arcte adhaerentem (Agardh), when dried it consituts a green surface, opaque, here and there granulate or farinaceous, tightly adhering to the paper.

- [Lichen cupularis] Radices nullae. Artissime enim cavernulis impascibilium lapidum, adglutinatus, nutrimentum ex athmosphaerae humiditate gelatinoso tegmine capere videtur (Hedw.); Roots none. Because most closely attached to the cavernules [i.e. small cavities] of the non nutritive stone, it appears to be able to capture nutriment from the humidity of the atmosphere by a gelatinous covering [i.e. integument].
