A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
alpestris,-e (adj.B), alpestrinus,-a,-um (adj.A): (sub)alpine zone of mountains, growing in the Alps, high; connoting 'nearly' alpine; see alpine;

- loci alpestres, alpine (high) places.

- herbae alpestres, in montibus Europae v. Asiae temperatae crescentes, alpestrian herbs, growing in the mountains of Europe or temperate Asia.

- herbae in alpestribus totius orbis crescentes, herbs in high places of the whole world growing.

NOTE: Bailey renders 'alpestris' as 'nearly alpine'; alpinus is reserved for above tree-line. Equisetum arvense L. fo. alpestre (Wahlenb.) Luerss., of high mountains. Lycopodium annotinum var. alpestre Hartm. (of high mountains); cf. alpinus,-a,-um (adj.A).
