A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Agger,-eris (s.m.III), abl. sg. aggere: a pile, heap; an elevation over a plain from the deposition of material collected together (e.g. the tailings from a mine, the rubbish from a millhouse), such as rubbish, stone, sand, brushwood; a low hill, dam, dike or mole, a hillock, mound; see hill;

NOTE: not ager, gen. sing. agri (s.m.II), land in cultivation.

- Patria: In ericetis locisque siccis ad aggeres graminosos per totam Europam dispersum (JaegerSauerb.), native land: in places dominated by Erica species and dry places on grassy hills dispersed throughout all Europe.

- in rupibus et aggeribus cretaceis a Rothomago ad Meldam (DeCandolle), on cliffs and low chalk hills from Rothomagus to Melda.

- [Marsilea terrestris] in umbrosis, et humidis fossarum aggeribus variis in locis, ut in sylva aucuparia, vulgo, ‘la Ragnaja del Poggio Imperiale,’ et in quodam Impruneta castaneto nuncupato Lojano. (Mich.), in various shady places, and the humid earthen dikes of ditches, such as in the fowling-forest, commonly [called] ‘la Ragnaja del Poggio Imperiale.’

- [Riccardia; hepatic] Kerry, ad aggerem limosum humidiusculum, Connor Hill, in cavernis terrae humidae infra rupem, Killarney, O'Sullivans Cascade, ad rupem arenarium valde a catarrhacta irroratam (c. calyptr.) (Lindb.), on a muddy, somewhat moist hillock, “Connor Hill,” in a hollow of moist earth under a rock; Killarney, “O’Sullivans Cascade,” on a sandy rock drenched by a catarrhact.

- [moss] Ad aggeres arenosos, graminosos, ad viarum cavarum latera denudata saepe Barbulae fallaci, unguiculatae, Leptotrichi speciebus, Bryo argenteo et aliis associatum per totam Europam; in regione meridionali ad 4000' adscendens (JaegSauer), on grassy sandy heaps, on the exposed sides, of excavated roads, often associated with species of Barbula fallax, Barbula unguiculata, Leptotrichum, with Bryum argenteum and others throughout all Europe; in the southern region ascending to 4000 feet.

- [Dicranum heteromallum; moss] Habitat praesertim ad aggeres pinetorum ericetorumque. Hic Lipsiae im Oberholz nec non ubertim ad vallem piscinae, pineto lindenthalensi maxima pro parte conclusae (Hedw.; Adumb.), it grows especially on the mounds of Pine-associations and Erica-associations at Leipzig in the Oberholz (Germany) and also richly in the basin of a fish pond, for the most part enclosed, in a Pine-association in Lindenthal.

- [Endocarpon pusillum; lichen] Mihi circa Lipsiam obviam fuit Schoenfeldi supra murum antiquum argillaceum, et ad declivitatem aggeris praestructi piscinae, in sylva Lindenthalensi (Hedw.; Adumb.], was encountered by me around Leipzig, upon the ancient clay wall of Schoenfeld, and on the declivity of the prepared mound [i.e. dike] of the fishpool, in the forest of Lindenthal (Leipzig).
