Wood, “the hard part of a stem, formed chiefly of woody tissue or pleurenchyma” (Lindley); 'the lignified portion of plants, included within the cambium layer, but exclusive of the pith; the xylem elements of the united vascular bundles' (Jackson): lignum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. ligno, nom.& acc. pl. ligna; see bark, tree; - haec species ligni pinei putrescentis praesertim fabrefacti admodum cupida, sepibus, asseribus, palis etc. ubique innascitur (S&A), this species is most desirous of especially forming on rotten piny wood, it grows everywhere in fences, beams, stakes. - ad ligna putrida terramque umbrosam, on rotten wood (pl.) and shady soil. - arbor procera, ligno durissimo, a tall tree with very hard wood. Cunix,-icis (s.f.III), abl. sg. cunice: “(obsol. or misapplied) the separable place which intervenes between the wood and bark of Exogens” (Lindley). Grain (of wood), the appearance and texture of wood (aspectus (s.m.IV) lignosus or ligneosus) or textura (s.f.I) lignosa or ligneosa) especially due to the arrangement and direction of stratification of wood fibers: ordinatio,-onis (s.f.II) lignea, a woody pattern or arrangement; - conidiomata sporodochialia longitudinaliter secus texturam ligneosam extendentia atque coalescentia, conidiomata sporodochial, extending and coalescing along the grain.
