A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Vesica,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. vesica: a bladder, q.v., in the body of animals, the urinary bladder [or the gall bladder]; anything made of or resembling a bladder, e.g. a purse, q.v.; a bladder-like tumor, blister' (Lewis & Short); “the bladder (in men or animals); an animal’s bladder removed and put to various uses; inflated to form a balloon; as a container for liquids; a bladder-like swelling, a blister, cyst, etc.” (Glare).

Lithotomia,-ae (s.f.I) vesicae, surgical removal of a stone from the urinary bladder (Wilhelm Fabricius Hildanus) book published 1640; see lithotomos,-i (s.m.II).

- Saxifraga ub [=ob] effectu nomen habet, siquidem ultima species vesicae ac renum vitiis ac doloribus mederi, calculo & arenas dissolvere ac pellere, urinas provocare, stillicidioque auxiliari dicitur (Ray), Saxifrage gets its name due to its effect, since it is the ultimate species to cure disorders [= dat. pl.] and pain of the bladder and kidneys [NOTE SPELLING], to dissolve and expel kidney stones and [kidney] gra, to promote urine and as a remedying of bladder-trickle [i.e. reduced flow of urine].

Vesica piscis [gen.sg.], “fish-bladder,” “the shape made by the intersection of two circles of the same radius; used in art to surround a sacred figure” [piscis,-is (s.m.III), q.v., a fish] (Wikipedia “Vesica piscis” April 2024); see halo (Eng.noun).

De dolore vesicae, “on pain of the bladder” (Cassius Felix).

Ad passiones vesicae, on afflictions of the bladder(Cassius Felix).

- natura vesicae nervosa, the nervous nature of the bladder (when injured).
