A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Typus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. typo: = Gk. typos;

1. “in medical language, a form, type, character of intermittent fevers” (Lewis & Short).

2. a figure or image; a form, type, character; the ideal representative of a group, genus, species [> Gk. typos (s.m.II), a blow, the mark or impress or stamp of a blow, a print or mark; the pattern, model, type; a form of doctrine]; see type.

[from Wiktionary “typus;” 1. figure, image (bas-relief; in surveying, a ground-plan; Medieval Latin, a mystical figure or symbol, a prefiguration or portent; 2. type, form, sort, kind; 3. ((medicine) form, type, or character e.g. of a fever; 4. (numismatics) a coin die; 5. a printing form or font die, metal printing-letters.

NOTE: character,-eris (s.m.III), q.v., abl. sg. charactere, (in printing) ‘type’ [> Gk. charaktEr,-Eros (s.m.II), an engraver, one who mints coins; a die, stamp; a stamp on coins and seals (Liddell & Scott)]:

Typus,-i (s.m.II):

1. in singular, ‘literature, printed material, books.’

2. in plural [typi]: a printing house, a printery;

nom.pl. typi

gen.pl. typorum

acc.pl. typos

dat. & abl.pl. typis

NOTE: the dative plural is used as the locative (place where something is done) with first and second plural nouns;

- Typis Archicoenobii Montis Casini, from the Printing House of the Archabbey of Monte Cassino [or at the Archabbey of Monte Cassino].]

- Londini: Typis J. E. TAYLOR ET SOC., LITTLE QUEEN STREET, Holborn (B&H), at London [Londinum,-i (s.n.II)]: at the printing house [typi] J. E. TAYLOR [nom.sg.] and Associates [socii, nom.pl.], LITTLE QUEEN STREET, Holborn.

NOTE: Londini = gen.sg. Londinum,-i (s.n.II) = locative.
