Strix,-igis (s.f.III), abl.sg. strige = Gk. strix, also striyx [gamma xi], “also found as stlix” (Liddell & Scott); cf. (s)trizO, ‘to screech;’ cf. L. strideo (see stridens,-entis (part.B): “a screech-owl, which, according to the belief of the ancients, sucked the blood of young children” (Lewis & Short); “a kind of owl, regarded as a bird of ill omen, sometimes as a vampire or evil spirit’ (Glare); The Latin genus name Strix referred to a legendary, vampiric owl-monster believed to suck the blood of infants (Jobling); see ‘owl;’ cf. otus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. oto: = Gk. Otos, a kind of owl, the horned owl (Pliny) (Lewis & Short);

- striges stridentes, screeching or shrieking screech-owls. Cf. Gk. trizO: (of animals) to utter a shrill cry, to scream, cry, (of young birds, of bats, of ghosts (Liddell & Scott).
