Rima,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. rima: fissure, crack, cleft, slit; “the cleft-like ostiolum of certain Fungals” (Lindley); “1. a chink or cleft; 2. the ostiole of certain Fungi (Lindley):(Jackson); (in fungi) “(obsol.) the cleft ostiole of certain fungi” (S&D) [> L. rima,-ae (s.f.I): a cleft, crack, chink, fissure, gap, cracks (Lewis & Short)]; see ostiolum,-i (s.n.II);

- porro rimas & foramina casarum pauperiores his obturant (Dill.), furthermore the poor [the peasants] stop up the cracks and holes of their cottages with these [mosses, e.g. Sphagnum].

- capsula bivalvis vel rima longitudinali dehiscens, capsule bivalved or dehiscent by a longitudinal slit.

- capsula primum carnosa, rimis 2 longitudinalibus dehiscens, capsule at first fleshy, dehiscing by 2 longitudinal fissures.

- lumen ob parietum incrassationem fere nullum, ad rimam angustam reductum, lumen on account of the thickness of the walls almost none, reduced to a narrow fissure.

- antherae obovatae, connectivo apice dilatato, thecis apice distantibus basi contiguis per totam longitutinem rima dehiscentibus, anthers obovate, with the connective broadened at the apex, the thecae separated at the apex touching at the base for the whole length by a fissure dehiscing (Stearn).

- antherae rima hippocrepiformi dehiscentes (B&H), anthers dehiscent with a horseshoe-shaped slit.

- carpella nunc capsularia rima supera dehiscentia, nunc capsularia bivalvia rima infera dehiscentia, nunc follicularia, nunc subcarnosa indehiscentia (DeCandolle), the carpels sometimes resembling a capsule, dehiscent above the fissure, sometimes like a bivalved capsule, dehiscent below the fissure, sometimes like a follicle, sometimes nearly fleshy and indehiscent [i.e. opening irregularly].

- antherae sessiles v. filamento fultae et erectae, 2-loculares, rimis porisve dehiscentes, rarius 4-loculares v. peltatae et rima circulari dehiscentes (B&H), the anthers sessile or supported by a filament and erect, 2-locular, dehiscing by fissures or pores, more rarely 4-locular or peltate and dehiscing by a circular fissure.

- processibus plurimis lamellosis subulatis intra albuminis rimas foraminave immersis (DeCandolle), with many lamellose processes immersed among cracks or openings.

- [fungus] sphaerulae, quas inanes vidimus , globosae fere, contiguae, in series longiores brevioresve rectilineas intra rimas ligni dispositae , laeves nec cirrhosae, totae immersae (S&A), the sphaerules that we saw empty, almost globose, contiguous, deposited in longer or shorter rectilinear rows within the cracks of wood, smooth or cirrhose, the whole immersed.

- albumen rimis transversalibus aut foraminibus contiguis exsculptum (DeCandolle), the albumen carved out with transverse slits or contiguous openings.

- antherae oblongae, erectae, basi obtusae v. sagittatae, loculis contiguis rima longitudinali dehiscentibus(B&H), anthers oblong, erect, obtuse at the base or sagittate, with the locules contiguous, dehiscent by a longitudinal slit.
