A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Reptatrix,-icis (s.f.III), abl.sg. reptatrice: a creeper, a crawler; in plants, perhaps denoting the development of stolons or rhizomes [> L. reptans,-antis (part.B): creeping, crawling + L. female agent suffix –trix,-icis (s.f.III)]; see agent.

NOTE: when used as an epithet it is a noun in apposition to the generic name (i.e. not an adjective).

NOTE: also that the epithet seems to be used only with genera of the feminine gender – the masculine agent suffix is –or,-oris (s.m.III);

NOTE: not –thrix,-thrichis (s.f.III), q.v., in Gk. comp.: ‘hair.’

- [Nasturtium supinum; Lepidium latifolium] notae hujus sunt folia integra magna, flosculi parvi albi, siliquae itidem parvae, radix reptatrix, odor & sapor piperis” (Ray), the characters of this are the leaves entire [i.e. simple], large, the florets small, white, the siliques likewise small, the root a creeper, the odor and taste of pepper.

Diplache,-ae (s.f.I) reptatrix; Festuca,-ae (s.f.I) reptatrix; Oxalis,-idis (s.f.III) reptatrix; Poa,-ae (s.f.I) reptatrix.

Reptatrix,-icis (s.f.III), abl.sg. Reptatrice = a genus of insects, e.g. Reptatrix crassipes.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
