Pera,-ae (s.f.I): “a bag worn slung over the shoulder (for carrying the day’s provisions, etc.), satchel” (Glare); syn. funda, marsupium, pasceolus [= Gk. pEra (s.f.I) “a leathern pouch, a wallet, scrip, knapsack = L. pera” (Liddell & Scott)]; dim. peridium, q.v.; dim. of peridium = peridiole, q.v.; cf. sac; see pouch.

Peridiole, q.v., “a membrane by which the spores of some Algals are immediately covered. Also the diminutive of Peridium, a secondary and interior peridium” (Lindley): peridiolum,-i (s.n.II) [> Latinized peridium + L. dim. -olum].

Peridium, q.v., “an external coat or skin covering over the parts of reproduction, as in Lycoperdon [fungus]. Also a membranous, dry receptacle, usually containing a large quantity of powder” (Lindley) [ > Gk. pEra (s.f.I) + Gk. dim. -idion].

Perule, q.v., bud scale, “the covering of a leaf-bud formed by scales. Also a projection in the flower of Orchids formed by the enlargement of two lateral sepals” (Lindley): perula,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. perula, nom. pl. perulae, acc. pl. perulas, dat.& abl.pl. perulis [> L. perula,-ae (s.f.I), a little wallet, a pocket > dim. pera,-ae (s.f.I) a pouch, bag + L. -ula; also Gk. pEra].

Acropera,-ae (s.f.I): Gk.: from acros, the extremity, and pera, a small sack, because of the saccate appendage at the apex of the labellum. Orchidaceae. (Paxton).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
