Ora,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. ora: edge, border, rim, boundary; sea coast, shore; cf. shore [> L. ora,-ae (s.f.I), border, brim, edge, margin, end, boundary; the coast, sea-coast; syn. litus, ripa; region, clime, country (Lewis & Short)]; see shore

1. (outside) edge, border, rim, boundary; edge of a cavity;

- calyx oram perhumilem dentibus apiculatis 5 ornatam formans, calyx forming an edge ornamented with 5 apiculate teeth.

2. an outline, the perimeter of a figure.

3. a region, district, land;

- orae extremae, the most distant lands

- orae ultimae, the farthest shores.

4. a climate region, zone (Glare).

5. “a division of the world or universe, (cosmic) region” (Glare);

- orae luminis, the upper world of light, ‘the land of the living’ (Glare)

3. (sea) coast, the outline of the land at the edge of the sea;

- ora maritima, the sea-coast.

- ad oras arenosas insulae Moreton Island (F. Muell.), on the sandy shores of Moreton Island.

- in Mari Pacifico (in Oceano Pacifico) ad oras Peruviae, in Pacific Ocean on the coasts of Peru [Stearn].

- hab. ad oras Novae Zelandiae: it grows on the coasts of New Zealand.

- in Africae calidioris ora occidentali (DeCandolle), on the western shores of warmer Africa.

Ora Eboris: Ivory Coast, ‘Coast of Ivory;’ western tropical Africa.

Oricola,-ae (s.f.I): coast- or shore-dwelling.

Panicum columbianum (of the District of Columbia) var. oricola, a grass of open sandy soil on the Atlantic Ocean coast of the United States.

Orae radicum: “(obsol.) the spongioles” (Lindley); orae = pl. (> L. ora, extremity, outside edge) radicum [gen.pl. radix,-icis (s.f.III)], (obsol.) = spongioles (Jackson); = rootcap, q.v.
