Introduction:

1. a non native species; see ‘alien (noun);’ opp. native (noun);

- [Ledgeria] Genus nuncupavi in honorem clar. C. Ledger, naturae strenui observatoris, de aucheniarum in Australiana introductione meritissimi (F. Mueller), I have named the genus in honor of the eminent C. Ledger, a vigorous observer of nature, for the highly merited Australian introduction of auchenias.

NOTE: “Alpaca (Auchenia paco), a ruminant of the Camel family, living on the Andes from the Equator to Tierra del Fuego. The manufacture of alpaca stuffs and some years ago a herd was imported into Australia with no better result” (Wikipedia).

2. also as introduction to a book or speech, see ‘preface;’ introductio,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. introductione; introitus,-us (s.m.IV), abl. sg. introitu, a beginning, introduction, prelude; isagoge,-es and isagoga,-ae (s.f.I) = Gk. eisagOgE: an introduction (Lewis & Short); Gk.: “introduction to a subject, elementary teaching; elementary treatise” (Liddell & Scott);

- isagoge in rem herbariam (Tournefort), elementary teaching on botany.
