A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Goose (Eng.noun), pl. geese: anser,-eris (s.m.III), q.v., abl. sg. ansere, nom.&acc. pl. anseres; chen-, cheno: in Gk. comp., q.v., a goose, gander [> Gk. chEn,a goose]; see fowl.

NOTE: ‘goose’ refers to both male and female birds; when paired with ‘gander,’ ‘goose’ refers to a female bird and ‘gander’ to the male.

Anser,-eris (s.m.III), “a genus of birds (family Anatidae), comprising the typical geese” (WIII); anseres,-um (pl.m.III), pl. of anser,-eris (s.m.III), ‘goose,’ a suborder of Anseriformes, including ducks, geese, swans and mergansers.

pertaining to geese: anserinus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.
