A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Epistomium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. epistomio, also epitonium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. epitonio = Gk. epitonion; also epistomion, : valve, plug; cock or faucet on a water pipe; a vent; a plug or other instrument by which an aperture could be opened or closed [> Gk. (as epitonion) a peg or key by which the strings of an instrument are tuned; the handle of a tap, a turn-cock; the valve or stop in an organ-pipe” cf. epistomoO: to stop up, close (after Liddell & Scott)]; see stopper;
NOTE: one might have thought the word derives in some way from epi-, above + stoma,-atis (s.n.III), a mouth or aperture.
- epistomium e poro exitus 6-8 um lato depulsum, plug out of an exit pore 6-8 um wide expelled.
[zoology; a gastropod] Conus epistomium [sic]; Buccinum epistomium

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
