A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Boss (Eng.noun), a protuberant part, a round swelling part, a knoblike process; a raised ornamentation shaped from the material of the object it ornaments; (fungi) “a knob or ‘umbo’” (S&D): umbo,-onis (s.m.III), q.v., abl. sg. umbone, nom. & acc.pl. umbones, dat. & abl. pl. umbonibus; bulla,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. bulla: a rounded object like a bubble but used of bosses of knobs (as a door-knob); see bulla,-ae (s.f.I), knob; thickening (noun); see umbo;

- drupa tenuiter carnosa, ovoidea, calycis limbo parvo coronata, inter lobos umbone parvo terminata (B&H), drupe thinly fleshy, ovoid, crowned with the little limb of the calyx, between the lobes ended by a small umbo.
