A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Barba,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. barba, nom. pl. barbae, acc. pl. barbas, dat. & abl. pl. barbis: ‘beard;’ also ‘whiskers;’; cf. barbatus,-a,-um (adj.A), said of ‘long weak hairs in tufts;’

- [fungus] Sphaeria strigosa: (a) juxta naturam picta aucta (d) junior barba incolumi (b) adulta setis semifractis(c) verticaliter secta, inanis (S&A), a) illustrated enlarged near to nature d) younger with beard intact (b) mature with the setae half-broken (c) cut vertically, empty.

- [fungus] barba satis densa e setis constat rigentibus longis (S&A), the beard quite dense composed of stiff setae.

- [Sedum majus] Sempervivum sive alterum Jovis Barba (Tourn.), Sempervivum or the other Beard of Jove [i.e. Juppiter].

Tinea,-ae (s.f.I) barbae (gen.sg.): barber’s tinea; “a dermatomycosis of the bearded area of the face and neck caused by various species of Trichophyton and Microsporum” (S&D); see tinea,-ae (s.f.I).
