Aegilops,-opis (s.f.III), abl. sg. Aegilope L., Goat-Grass, “Name used by Theophrastus for a kind of wild oat” (Fernald 1950) [> Gk. aigilOps,-Opos (s.m.III); cf. aigilos (s.f.II), “a herb of which goats are fond, = aigilOps” (Liddell & Scott)], A. cylindrica Host; also ‘haver-grass, Aegilops ovata; also Turkey oak, Quercus Cerris (Liddell & Scott); also in Gk. a synonym for bromos (s.m.II), q.v., in Greek, ‘oats,’ Avena sativa; wild oats, Avena barbata (Liddell & Scott); cf. aeg-, aego-, aegi-: in Gk. comp. a goat; see aex, gen.sg. aegis.

Aegilops,-opis (s.f.III) Linn. Goat's eye. Supposed to be useful for a disease of one corner of the eye, hence the name. Gramineae. (Paxton).
